Fleece as a hiking mid layer: advantages, limitations and practical differences compared with a softshell jacket.

Fleece used as a midlayer for hiking

Fleece remains one of the most useful garments for hiking, trekking and mountain use. It does not stand out for being the most compact option or for offering the best wind protection, but as a midlayer it has a combination that is hard to match: it provides warmth, breathes well, dries quickly and still works reasonably well in damp conditions.

For a while, I stopped using it and switched to softshell jackets. They seemed lighter and more versatile because they combined insulation and outer protection in a single garment. After several outings, I went back to the traditional fleece.

Not because softshell is a bad option, but because a garment that does several things is not always the most suitable for every condition. The key is not to carry the bare minimum at any cost, but to build a layering system that you can adapt to exertion, wind, rain and temperature.

Using a fleece during a hiking outing

A softshell jacket usually combines an outer fabric that resists wind and abrasion with an inner face that provides some warmth or comfort. Depending on the model, it may shed light rain, but it does not normally replace a waterproof jacket in sustained rain.

It is a comfortable, stretchy and practical garment in cool, windy conditions when your pace is not too high. It can work very well for winter activities, abrasive terrain or situations where you want to wear the same jacket for many hours.

The problem comes when it is used as the only solution. Because it has a less breathable outer layer than a fleece, it usually vents less well on climbs, in mild temperatures or when walking fast. If it is warm and raining, it is easy to end up damp inside even if the garment provides some protection from rain on the outside.

The midlayer within the layering system

The layering system works because each garment has a specific job. This lets you add or remove clothing before you sweat too much or get cold during a stop.

  • Base layer: worn next to the skin. It should manage sweat, dry quickly and remain comfortable during exertion.
  • Midlayer: provides insulation. Its job is to retain some body heat without excessively blocking moisture from escaping.
  • Outer layer: protects against wind, rain or snow. This is where windproof and waterproof jackets fit, depending on the conditions.

In this setup, a fleece is a clear and simple midlayer. If it is cold, you put it on. If you are climbing hard and start to warm up, you take it off or open the zip. If it rains, you add a waterproof jacket over it. Each layer is used when needed.

This may seem less minimalist than wearing a softshell, but it gives you more scope to regulate temperature. For example, on a summer route in Spain with rain and mild temperatures, you will probably need a T-shirt and a lightweight waterproof jacket, rather than an insulating garment with integrated outer protection.

Using a fleece for hiking

Fleece is a synthetic insulation fabric, usually made from polyester. Its modern development is closely linked to Polartec, which popularised it as a lightweight, quick-drying alternative to wool. Here I explain the differences between down and synthetic insulation in mountain clothing.

Its structure traps warm air close to the body while allowing water vapour to pass through fairly well. It is not waterproof and offers little wind protection, but that lack of a barrier is precisely part of its advantage when you are walking and generating heat.

There are many types of fleece. As a general guide, lightweight models —microfleece or 100-weight fleece— usually make more sense for active hiking and three-season use. They add warmth without turning the garment into a bulky item in your pack. Thicker fabrics are warmer, but they also weigh more and take up more space, and can be too much while walking.

Rather than looking at weight alone, it is worth considering when you will use it:

  • For steady-paced hiking in mild conditions, a lightweight fleece with a zip is usually easy to regulate.
  • For stops, camp or cold days, you may need a warmer insulating layer.
  • In strong wind, fleece works better combined with a windshirt or rain jacket.
  • In wet conditions, its quick drying and ability to keep insulating are especially useful qualities.

Advantages of fleece

  • Good breathability: it lets moisture vapour generated while walking escape better than many garments with a more tightly woven outer fabric.
  • Quick drying: if it gets damp from sweat, mist or light rain, it usually recovers sooner than other insulating layers.
  • Insulates even when wet: it loses some of its warmth, but it does not suddenly stop working.
  • Easy regulation: a front zip allows you to vent without taking the garment off.
  • Comfort and durability: it is a comfortable, durable fabric suitable for frequent use.
  • Layering versatility: it works well with a technical T-shirt, a windshirt or a waterproof jacket, as the weather changes.

Its main limitation is that it offers little wind protection on its own and takes up more space than some modern insulated garments. It should therefore not be seen as a universal solution. If the aim is to rest in very cold conditions or reduce pack volume as much as possible, other insulating layers may be worth considering. But for hiking, managing sweat and adapting to changes in pace, it remains a very solid option.

My experience and a practical recommendation

Pullover fleece in the mountains

I started using a pullover fleece again on my outings, and the results were better than I expected. It was easy to maintain a comfortable temperature: if I needed to vent, I lowered the zip; if the weather changed, I added an outer layer.

For me, separating insulation from protection against the elements works better than always relying on a softshell. My base layer stays drier, and I have more options for adjusting my clothing throughout the route.

That does not mean fleece is always the best choice. Before heading out, consider the area, the forecast, the elevation gain, your hiking pace and the time you will spend stopped. Test your layering system on simple outings and adjust from there. In the mountains, the right garment is not the lightest or the most technical on paper: it is the one that lets you stay dry, regulate your temperature and keep some margin when conditions change.
