The Southwest 55 is a high-capacity backpack made by Hyperlite Mountain Gear in Maine (USA). It’s designed for longer trips where you need more volume without complicating the design or adding unnecessary weight.
Unlike other models from the brand, it uses solid-fabric external pockets instead of mesh, making it better suited to demanding terrain where constant abrasion from rock or vegetation can damage the material.
WHEN TO USE IT
With ~55L of internal volume plus external pockets (~65L total), this pack is built for multi-day routes or long thru-hikes where you need more self-sufficiency or extra gear.
It works especially well when you’re carrying more food, winter gear, or bulky equipment. It stays stable around 12–18 kg, and is a better option than the 40L version when volume starts to be the limiting factor.

DESIGN
The design is simple and functional: a large main compartment, internal sleeve for a hydration system, large external pockets, and hipbelt pockets for quick access. The roll-top closure lets you adjust volume to match your load.
It uses two removable aluminum stays to transfer weight to the hipbelt. It’s not a full frame, but it adds enough structure for medium-to-heavier loads while keeping the setup light and stable.

MADE FROM DYNEEMA COMPOSITE HYBRID (DCH)
It’s made from Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH), a laminate that combines Dyneema fibers with an outer polyester face. It’s highly abrasion-resistant and doesn’t absorb water, so it won’t gain weight in rain or humidity.
It’s not fully waterproof (even though the fabric is), so using a dry bag inside is recommended in prolonged rain. This keeps weight low without compromising durability.

Mochila con capacidad de aceptar volumen si se necesita (de lo contrario se puede reducir con las correas de ajuste) y realmente muy cómoda. La he estado usando este verano en 2 travesías y me ha sorprendido lo bien que descansa el peso en las caderas. El material parece muy resistente y esperemos que duradero.
