The Unbound 40 is a hiking backpack made in Maine (USA) by Hyperlite Mountain Gear. It’s very similar to the Southwest, but with more accessible pockets—ideal for hiking longer without stopping.
When to use it
This model pushes you to carry only the essentials. With a 40 L main compartment plus 9 L in additional pocket space, it offers just the right capacity for an overnight trip or multi-day treks.
It can comfortably carry up to 18 kg, and thanks to its fully taped fabric and seams, it’s completely waterproof. This removes the need for an additional rain cover.

Design
The front pocket, along with the large side pockets and the stretchy bottom pocket, keeps everything you need within easy reach—even while moving. The roll-top lets you adjust the load as you go, and makes it easy to stash a jacket, a sleeping pad, or rope.
Another difference is that it uses only a removable stay to transfer weight to the hip belt instead of a full frame. The removable hip belt keeps the load stable and improves comfort while carrying.

Made from Dyneema Composite Hybrid
The Unbound hiking backpack uses a hybrid fabric made from Dyneema and polyester, known for its durability and strength (DCH). Made with a 50-denier version of DCH, with 150 denier on the base to handle higher abrasion.
Dyneema is a waterproof fabric and doesn’t absorb water like other UL fabrics. Combined with taped seams, it’s fair to say this pack is practically waterproof.
