The Southwest 40 is an ultralight trekking backpack made by Hyperlite Mountain Gear in Maine (USA). It’s designed for demanding routes where abrasion resistance and durability matter more than pushing weight savings to the absolute limit.
Unlike other models from the brand, it uses solid-fabric external pockets instead of mesh, making it better suited to harsh terrain with dense vegetation, rock, or heavy off-trail use.
With ~40L of internal volume plus external pockets, this pack is built for multi-day trips with light, compact gear. It works especially well when you already have a dialed-in setup and don’t need to carry unnecessary items.
It’s a solid choice on routes where the terrain chews up gear. The solid pockets hold up better to continuous use than mesh, which really shows on long traverses or off-trail. It carries comfortably around 9–14 kg.
The design is simple and functional: a main compartment with roll-top closure, large quick-access external pockets, and hipbelt pockets for essentials. The roll-top lets you adjust volume to your load and compress the pack easily.
It includes two removable aluminum stays that help transfer weight to the hips. It’s not a minimalist frameless pack, but it’s not a full frame either—aiming for a balance of support, stability, and weight.
It’s made from Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH), a laminate that combines Dyneema fibers with a polyester outer face. It’s highly abrasion-resistant and doesn’t absorb water, so it won’t gain weight in rain or humidity.
It’s not fully waterproof (the seams aren’t sealed), but it protects contents well in normal conditions. High-wear areas use thicker versions of the fabric to increase durability.
