X-Dome 2

The X-Dome 2, made in Canada by Durston, is an ultralight double-wall, 2-person freestanding tent that stands without the need for stakes. It’s designed for those looking for a stable, easy-to-pitch shelter, even on ground where staking is difficult.

When to use it

It’s a good fit for multi-day or multi-week trips where a freestanding shelter helps on challenging terrain (hard ground, rock, platforms, or places where it’s hard to get solid anchors). It also makes sense if you value being able to pitch the fly first in the rain, keeping the inner more protected during setup.

If your top priority is minimizing weight above all else, or you’re looking for a very specific winter tent, it may not be the ideal option. As reinforcement, it allows you to add trekking poles to improve wind stability and, in certain conditions, provide extra support.

Design

The poles run on the outside and attach to the tent as a set, making fly-first pitching easy and letting you change the order without any special “tricks.” In real use, this helps when it’s raining or when you want to pitch one layer first and finish the rest later.

Access and interior organization are handled with simple details: magnetic door closures, 4 interior pockets, and internal hang loops. It also has two vestibules, useful for storing wet gear or cooking with more space (always with proper ventilation and good judgment).

Made from high-tenacity polyester

The fly is 100% (high-tenacity) polyester. Compared to nylon, polyester typically absorbs less water and tends to hold tension better in humid conditions, which matters if you want a more stable pitch overnight.

The inner is available in a Regular version (more ventilation) or Solid (more protection from cold and wind).
