The Kakwa 55, made by Durston Gear in Canada, is a multi-day pack for routes where you want to keep overall gear weight under control without giving up a framed, supportive carry.
Its approach combines an aluminium frame and a fit system designed to transfer load to the hips, with pockets laid out so you can use them without taking the pack off.
Designed for multi-day trips where total weight can climb and you need a structured pack with load lifters to help redistribute weight and reduce pressure on your shoulders.
If you’re after a very cushioned feel on your back, note that the back panel and frame are firmer than on other packs in this category. The fabric is water-resistant, but the pack is not waterproof: water can enter through seams and through the hydration port.
The structure uses hollow aluminium tubing to provide stiffness at lower weight than traditional solid stays. The frame connects directly to the hipbelt and the upper load lifters, enabling a more direct weight transfer to the hips.
For fit, the “S”-shaped shoulder straps and the dual-strap hipbelt with tensioning system let you cinch the pack with less effort and more precision. The 2026 version updates the hipbelt, adding lumbar reinforcement and improving durability.
Available in Ultra 200X, a material designed for mountain use, where abrasion and contact with vegetation or rock are common. It’s chosen for its balance of durability and weight.
This fabric offers good resistance to abrasion and moisture. The laminate provides noticeable water protection, but it isn’t watertight: if you expect prolonged rain, it’s best to use a waterproof pack liner or cover.
