The X-Mid 2, made by Durston, is an ultralight double-wall tent for trekking and backpacking, designed to pitch with trekking poles. It is aimed at hikers looking for a 2-person tent with good usable space, two vestibules, and a simple pitch with only 4 required stakes.
Compared to other trekking-pole tents, the key points here are the geometry, the polyester fly, and the door design. The result is a sensible option for long-distance routes where a low weight, rain protection, and adjustable ventilation all matter.
It makes sense for anyone who really needs a 2-person tent: two hikers, one person who prioritizes interior space, or long trips where two doors and two vestibules are useful for splitting gear. Because of its length and floor plan, it also suits taller users better than many alternatives, up to around 193 cm.
It is important to keep in mind that it requires trekking poles for structure and depends on at least 4 stakes to pitch. If you do not use poles or want a freestanding structure that does not rely on stakes, it is not the most logical choice.
The construction is double-wall, with two vestibules and doors that are not blocked by the poles. In real use, this makes it easier to get in and out, cook, or store backpacks without taking up as much of the access area. The doors can also be kept open and turned into a porch with a pole or trekking pole, which is useful when you want shade or more ventilation without fully closing off the space.
The fly extends close to the ground to limit drafts and splashback, but it can be raised for more ventilation. It also includes large adjustable vents and rain-protected doors even when open. The 50–55° panel angles aim to balance wind and snow shedding with maintaining usable interior volume.
The fly uses high-strength 15D silpoly. In practice, polyester has a well-known advantage over nylon in this context: it tends to sag less when it gets damp, so the pitch needs fewer adjustments during the night or in unstable weather.
For 2026, the floor is updated with a more durable fabric, although the brand does not specify the exact material. It also adds factory-sealed seams, narrow high-precision stitching, double stitching, double-fold edges, extra reinforcements, and generous bartacks. This does not change how the tent is used, but it does point to a more refined construction in wear and stress areas.
