Exactly, it’s a poncho that transforms into a single-wall pyramid shelter. It serves as both waterproof clothing and a shelter, making it an ideal option for hikers who want to minimize the weight and volume of their backpack without compromising on protection. It’s a versatile and efficient solution for lightweight backpacking and provides multiple functionalities in one item.
The Gatewood Cape ultralight poncho tarp tent from the American company Six Moon Designs is a unique combination of a shelter and a rain poncho. With its ultralight weight and minimal volume, it takes up very little space in your backpack.
Use as a Poncho
When used as a poncho, it is large enough to completely protect you from the rain, including your backpack. The front zipper acts as an opening for ventilation, and the open skirt design allows fresh air to enter from the bottom.
When used as a shelter, it provides complete 360º weather protection. Its robust pyramid design allows rain or snow to slide down easily, and the wind simply flows around it.
If you add the Serenity Net Tent (sold separately), you can convert the Gatewood Cape ultralight poncho tarp tent into a true double-wall tent with total protection against insects.
The Gatewood Cape ultralight poncho tarp tent uses a 30D Ripstop nylon impregnated with silicone (Silnylon). Silicone is a hydrophobic material (repels water), making the fabric highly waterproof. It also adds some elasticity, similar to nylon itself, making it more resistant to pulls and tears.

I’m a fan of multifunctional and lightweight items; having protection both when you’re walking and when you’re resting is a real win, and it’s also good quality.

I bought it to do the Camino de Santiago, and although the price may seem expensive, I have to say it’s worth every cent. The quality of the material it’s made from is very good and TRULY waterproof, since it repels water really well and dries in just a few minutes once the rain stops.
