The Unbound 40 is a hiking backpack made in Maine (United States) by Hyperlite Mountain Gear. It is very similar to the Southwest but with more accessible pockets, ideal for non-stop walking for extended periods.
It’s a model that forces you to carry only the essentials. With a main volume of 40 liters plus 9 liters in additional pockets, it provides just the right space for an overnight getaway or multi-day treks.
It can comfortably carry up to 18 kg, and thanks to its fabric and fully sealed seams, it is completely waterproof. Thus, it eliminates the need for an additional backpack cover.

The front pocket, along with the spacious side pockets and the expandable bottom pocket, ensures everything you need is within reach, even on the move. Additionally, the top is rollable, allowing you to adjust the load as you go. You can even grab a jacket, a mat, or ropes.
Another difference is that it uses only one removable support to transfer weight to the lumbar belt instead of a full frame. The removable belt ensures the load stays stable and enhances carrying comfort.

The Unbound hiking backpack uses a hybrid fabric made of Dyneema and polyester, known for its durability and strength (DHC). Made with a 50 denier DHC version and 150 denier for the base to withstand more wear and tear.
Dyneema is a waterproof fabric and does not absorb water like other UL fabrics. This, along with the sealed seams, could say that the backpack is practically waterproof.
