The Unbound 55 is a hiking backpack made in Maine (USA) by Hyperlite Mountain Gear. It keeps the brand’s minimalist philosophy and is very similar to the Southwest, but with more accessible external pockets, designed for long hikes without needing to stop.
When to use it
The Unbound 55 is perfect for multi-day routes where you need more capacity without giving up light weight. With a total volume of 55 liters (44 liters inside + 11 liters in pockets), it lets you carry a bit more gear for long treks or when you need more self-sufficiency.
It is fully waterproof thanks to the Dyneema fabric and taped seams, so there’s no need to carry a pack cover. It can also carry up to 18 kg comfortably.

Design
The side and front pockets are designed for easy access to your gear while on the move. The roll-top lets you adjust the volume depending on what you’re carrying, and the bottom pocket is ideal for storing items you want to keep within reach at all times.
As in the 40L model, it includes a removable stay that transfers weight to the hipbelt without the need for a full frame, keeping weight low and improving comfort on the trail.

Made from Dyneema Composite Hybrid
It’s made from Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH) fabric, which combines Dyneema and polyester. It’s very durable and does not absorb water, ideal for demanding conditions. The bottom is reinforced with DCH150 to handle more abrasion.
Thanks to the taped seams and waterproof fabric, it performs like a fully waterproof pack.
